Route and drive time

The drive to Hallstatt in the Salzkammergut takes about 3½ hours, first on the A1 West motorway, then on country roads through Bad Ischl. From Hallstatt to Salzburg it is about 1¼ hours, for example past Lake Wolfgang. The way back to Vienna follows the A1, about 3–3¼ hours.

That is about 670 kilometres in total. You spend most of the day on the road, about 5 hours are left for the two places. Every break on the way comes out of your time on site.

The day step by step

An example with pickup at 7 am. You choose the pickup time when you book; the times on the way depend on traffic.

What you can see in the time

Hallstatt, about 2 hours

Time for the market square with its colourful houses, the path along the lake and the parish church with the Bone House. The funicular takes you to the Skywalk viewing platform, but then little time is left for the village. The funicular is not included.

Salzburg, about 3 hours

Time for the old town with Getreidegasse and the cathedral, and for the Mirabell Gardens on the other side of the Salzach. If you go up to Hohensalzburg Fortress, you have less time for the old town. Funicular and admission are not included.

Good to know

Meeting point and time

The day is tightly planned. In each place, agree with your chauffeur on a meeting point and the time to move on.

Drop-off and parking

The centre of Hallstatt and the old town of Salzburg are largely closed to cars. Your chauffeur stops as close as the rules allow and waits in a car park nearby.

Crowds in Hallstatt

In summer and at weekends many visitors come to Hallstatt during the day. The lanes are then full and you move more slowly.

Winter and Advent

In winter, snow can make the drive through the Salzkammergut longer, which leaves less time on site. The Hallstatt funicular does not run all year. During Advent, the Christmas markets make Salzburg’s old town busier than usual.

Questions about the day in Hallstatt and Salzburg

Is there enough time for both places?

For a first impression, yes. You have about 2 hours in Hallstatt for the market square and the lakeside, and about 3 hours in Salzburg for the old town. There is not enough time for the salt mine or museums. If you want more time in one place, book the Hallstatt or the Salzburg day trip.

How much is the Hallstatt and Salzburg day trip?

€ 1,270 per car in Business Class for 13 hours, tolls, motorway stickers and parking included. Longer than 13 hours is only possible after checking with us.

Can we go the other way round, Salzburg first?

Yes. The roads are the same, only in a different order, and your time on site stays the same. Add your wish when you book.

Can the day end in Salzburg?

No, the day trip ends at your pickup address. If you want to stay the night in Salzburg or Hallstatt, book the one-way ride from Vienna and the ride back for the day you leave. Prices and booking are on the Hallstatt and Salzburg pages.
